Hardcover, approx 4 1/4 x 7 inches, full feathered tan leather, decorative gilt edges (on boards) and lettering on red spine label, 312 pp, illustrated with 3 plates by Ansell (Charles? ), engraved by Skelton (William? ). Contents pages for Volume II bound in instead of those for this volume (illiterate help? ). Boards detached, moderately scuffed, corners bumped with bit of cardboard exposed there and at a few point along edges, an approx 3 inch long closed crack developing along lower portion of spine. Internally, 1/2 to 1 inch deep light tan stain along edges of endpapers, prev owner's sgn cut off of title page (two 1/2 x 1 inch cuts; text unaffected), paper lightly age yellowed, with an occasional spot of foxing, mainly on or adjacent to plates, plates have approx 1/8th inch tanning along edges, 6 or 7 dogears, apparently from bumping, o/w tight, clean and unmarked; possibly never read. Nice early edition; 2 of the 3 plates are dated. Literature; picaresque novel.

The mottled full-calf cover has a quarter-inch gilt decorative (heart-shaped designs) strip on back and front covers, replicated on inside covers. All edges gilt. Marbeled end-pages and inside covers. Five raised bands on gilt-decorated spines. Morocco and black labels, with date 1826 in gilt at foot of spine. Elegant engravings throughout. Book binder noted in miniscule type on upper left of inside fep of each volume. Some minor and very conservative restorative work on spines. Only slight negative is a one-inch clean tear on tissue of frontispiece, which is hardly noticeable. A few scratches on the highly polished covers. Spectacularly handsome set. Size: 16mo-over 5¾"-6¾" tall.
