"In the larger life of cities, Alexander Minchin was no longer the idle and good-humored cavalier to whom Rachel had learned to look for unfailing consideration at sea. The illustrative incidents may be omitted; but here he gambled, there he drank; and in his cups every virtue dissolved. Rachel's pride did not mend matters; she was a thought too ready with her resentment; of this, however, she was herself aware, and would forgive the more freely because there was often some obvious fault on her side before all was said. Quarrels of infinite bitterness were thus patched up, and the end indefinitely delayed. "-----from Chapter One: The End of Their Life.

I am not a fan of Gothic Romance generally, I only bought this book because I so enjoyed the same authors stories of Raffles, the almost gentleman thief. In case you don't know, E.W. Hornung was the brother in law of A. Conan Doyle and I think his equal in writing skill. Hornung created Raffles, the charming amoral lawbreaker to be the direct opposite of his in-laws creation
Sherlock Holmes in every way and no Holmes fan can fail to be amused by Raffles droll adventures. Based on the title, I thought this a mystery and there is a good mystery in it, but the mystery is secondary to what the publisher rightly calls a "...gothic mystery of high literary merit and great entertainment value...". A woman, wrongly accused of murdering her husband is saved from the mob by a complete stranger, a rich older man with a secret reason to want to marry her. He does in an early chapter and to tell more than that would be criminal, if you are not put off by books written in a turn of the century style then read this fine page turner for yourself! and get the Lancer paperback if you can find it, it has a classic woman fleeing a spooky mansion cover to boot. I'm a man, not a fan of romance novels and I absolutely endose this book!
