On the edge of town Joe Gunther encounters the lifeless body of Michelle Fisher. Her corpse offers him no clues about who she was or how she died. Snapshots and postcards show a woman who laughed hard and lived harder, while diaries reveal a rootless life marred by depression and drink. Suicide seems a reasonable conclusion, but Gunther suspects foul play.

I am reading the 18th novel by Archer Mayor. Some of what I read was exciting, but he has a few clunkers along the way, and "The Second Mouse" is one of these. I feel as though he tried to pack in a dozen ideas for a dozen books but decided to incorporate them into one novel. There is also the first contrived sex scenes, which, ordinarily I like if well done; Mayor misses the mark here. I cannot almost feel a publisher's editor breathing down Mayor's neck to get a novel out of him. This novel has few (if any) saving graces--skip it entirely.
