The Roman is a superb historical novel set in the era of Nero and early Christianity. The author, Mika Waltari, was perhaps Finland's best known novelist, and this book is part of his so-called trilogy which also contains his novels, The Etruscan and The Egyptian. Furthermore, it is also a sort of sequel to The Secret of the Kingdom. The novel concerns the live of a Roman named Minutus. His tale leads the reader through the Rome of Claudius and Nero (and of Peter and Paul). Minutus becomes entwined with both the doings of Rome's Imperial family and the early Church. The novelist catches the spirit of the times in a plausible way, and Waltari gives the reader a history lesson without wallowing in detail. His characters are vivid, frequently behaving in surprising ways. This work is worthy of reading, especially if the reader enjoys historical novels.
