[Books I & II]. American editon by James L. High, with notes. [end title] Book I first appeared in London in 1796 and Book II in 1802. This edition, comprising both books, has been edited for American readership, but has retained throughout the "text, orthography and arrangement" of the originals. Anstey was a barrister of Lincoln's Inn who died in 1819. His "Guide", purporting to be the professional lectures of Mr. Surrebutter, was a great spoof of the legal profession, remaining popular throughout the 19th century.
