First edition. Large 8vo. xiv, (2), 752 pp. Illustrated, portrait plates. Inscribed by the author in the year of publication. Laid in is a 2-page autograph letter, signed by Yancey 10 June 1846, written while serving in the United States House of Representatives, expressing pleasure in attempting to secure a high level command in the Mexican War for an unnamed correspondent. Yancey (1814-1863), in response to the Wilmot Proviso of 1848, wrote the Alabama Platform, "a simple statement of abstract principles, a constitution designed to curb the will of the majority and preserve to the states all powers not expressly granted to the federal government...William L. Yancey and the movement for Southern independence are inseparable in history" (DAB).
