Drawing on recently available materials from seven countries, plus United Nations archives, author and political historian William Stueck argues that the Korean War actually (albeit inadvertently ?) functioned as a substitute for World War III. While conceding the tragic and brutal nature of the war, Stueck suggests, from his research, that it helped to prevent an even more destructive conflict in Europe. Maps.

I bought this book based on a recommendation in an article in the Weekly Standard. I have read extensively on the Korean War and have interviewed over 40 veterans.
I expected an authoritative history of the background of the Korean War, descriptions of all important military actions, thorough political analysis, and a summary of what the Korean War meant in light of developments since.
This book is instead a political analysis based on the thesis (you've got to have big thesis, you know) that the Korean War was a proxy for a WWIII that didn't happen. There is some miliary action coverage, but it is squeezed into the thesis.
It is a dissertation type book directed at an international politics audience.
