Elizabeth Tone Summers (Cover Illustration) Good. 136 pages. Illustrations. Bibliography. Testing of John Bull. Memo Specifications, Roster of Locomotives Running Regulations. Format is 6 inches by 9 inches. Signed by author with sentiment on title page. Label residue inside back cover. John Hoxland White, Jr., was born on November 10, 1933 in Cincinnati, Ohio. His first job during high school entailed working on a gearbox assembly line at the Triumph Manufacturing Company. During his college years worked at the McGowan Pump Company. In 1958, he graduated and got a an internship position as a museum aide at the Smithsonian Institution. His early years at the Smithsonian Institution were spent working for Howard I. Chapelle, the curator of transportation. In 1960, he became an associate curator in the Land Transportation Section. From 1961 until 1966 he was an associate curator of railroads at the Museum of History and Technology, curator from 1967-1985, and senior historian from 1986 until his retirement in 1989. White authored an important series of books on American railroad history. These carefully researched and well documented works are valuable for students and enthusiasts of transportation history. The National Museum of American History planned to operate the John Bull under its own power on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the engine's first movement under steam. This work was produced in connection with this planned event. Written by John White, noted railroad historian and Curator of Transportation for the Smithsonian, this book is a complete biography of one of the very first American steam locomotives, the John Bull. The author discusses its construction in England in 1831, its use by the Camden & Amboy until 1866, its acquisition by the Smithsonian in 1885, and the year long study and testing program that allowed the John Bull to run again in 1981 on its 150th birthday. The book also discusses the controversial history of the Camden & Amboy and its curious and often eccentric engines that show how imported British engines were modified by American mechanics.
