If you are an avid admirer of Hermès scarves, you probably need to own this book. The production quality is top-notch, and the scarves that ARE shown are shown to full effect. The accompanying essays are informative and well-written. However, if you are a scarf collector, you will be disappointed that so few scarves appear in the book. Hermès has issued approximately 2,000 scarves since its first, in 1937. Clearly, it would have been impossible to include all 2,000 scarves in the book! However, the book's designers/editors chose to use "artistic" presentations (such as plastic overlays and cut-outs) to present scarf patterns, thus decreasing the number of scarves that might have been shown. The other, more serious flaw is the lack of an index. If you find a scarf on page 172 and want to know more about it, there is no way to learn the name of the scarf, the date it was issued, or its designer without going all the way to the back of the book and then flipping forward until you find the information (in tiny letters, I might add) that relates to page 172. I can see why the book's designer didn't want to include this information on the page with the scarf (I think. No, I really don't.) But all this flipping back and forth, especially in a 4.2-pound book, gets cumbersome very quickly. Since this is the only sourcebook for Hermès scarves, it is truly a "must-have" for serious scarf lovers and collectors. It just could have been so much better. I really wish I could have given it four stars... I wish it had deserved five.
