Years ago, I read dozens of Iris Murdoch novels. She was a brilliant storyteller using beautiful language to create a unique, complex and colorful world. I recall satisfying synchronicities that suggested an order in the universe and finely shaded observation of human nature, subtle and deep, that enriched my understanding of it in life.
Murdoch's darkness generally made one reading enough for me (Why go through that again?). This one alone I kept and re-read, with images, characters, and relationships that attracted me over and over.
It isn't sunny either, but there's somehow more light, the radiance of brightly colored jewels against black velvet (which, come to think of it, are also collected in the novel, by a character who enjoyed them that way). She also brightened the story with a little more humor and more joy than seemed customary for her.
Another reason I re-read it was that I needed to work through the ending, which I had some trouble accepting or understanding.
I think there were Murdoch novels with happier endings, but this one was the jewel.
