This book caught me by the blurb (not to mention the kid on the front is adorable!). This story talks about death in very interesting way. It's a lot of survivor's guilt. For the sake of no spoilers, Andrew is a very peculiar kid. He's a 17yr old who lived when his mother, father, and baby sister died in a car accident, so he essentially lives in a hospital because he's afraid to move on. Stepping outside of the hospital makes their deaths real and not alive any more. He meets some really interesting characters in the nurses and other patients. He has a very mature outlook on the world, but at the same time you can still see that he's 17.
The story takes place in the hospital the entire time, but it doesn't deter from the book in my opinion. If anything it needs to be like that to make it work. Then there's Rusty. Rusty is the boy who was brought in because he was set on fire at a party. Even though this book isn't heavy on the romance, the relationships in this story are so real.
I really liked this book. It is definitely one of my favorites. The pace is great which makes sense in that throughout this book he's also living the stages of grieving, which you can't tell up front, but the author mentioned it (and I saw this after I read it), but I can see that in hindsight. I'll have to come up with a more articulate reason for why I love this book later. 5+ stars
