The Cascades is one of twenty-seven volumes in the Time-Life book series The American Wilderness. In this series of books, readers journey to the wilderness areas of Canada, Mexico, and the United States. This volume presents the many facets of the Cascade Mountains in Washington, Oregon, and northern California. The opening chapter describes the weather, climate, and geographic setting of the Cascades. Subsequent chapters discuss the exploration and settlement of the region, important mountains (Mt. Rainier, Mt. Saint Helens, Mt. Shasta, and Lassen Peak) and lakes (Crater Lake, Hosmer Lake, and Lake Chelan), lava caves at the Newberry Volcanic National Monument in Oregon, forest succession, trees, and the northern Cascades in north-central Washington. Mountain goats, ospreys, bears, and cougars are among some of the animals portrayed in both text and photographs. This book was written before 1980 so there are many photographs of pre-eruption Mt. Saint Helens. In sum, author Richard L. Williams has written a very good book about one of the most scenic and geologically significant regions in the American wilderness.
