The spirit of party, 'in a work like this, I most devoutly deprecate; and my own feelings of per sonal obligation have more than once been wounded in pursuing a narrative whose only merit may be that of impartiality, under all the difficulties of living characters and recent times. By those who knew him not, and by those alone, I may, perhaps, be suspected of sacrificing the faith of history to dis charge an obligation of gratitude to a Nobleman to whom I am deeply indebted: but the historian who may be silent without danger, may praise without difficulty or reluctance; and posterity will readily confess that the prolonged government of the Duke of Manchester might furnish the subject of a sincere and ample panegyric.
