In doing so, they will be performing a patriotic service, for the conservation and wise use of soil and water on croplands, grasslands, and woodlands is the key to keeping our land productive, our people healthy, and our Nation strong and beautiful. Since conservation is as much a matter of favorable attitudes as of understanding and know-how, Camp Fire Girls should have every available opportunity to develop basic conservation concepts? Talking about resource-conservation problems and doing some thing constructive about them are the best ways of arriving at a real understanding of these concepts. A good place to start is in the communities in which the girls live. Here by direct observations and personal experiences, supplemented by supervised planned soil and water conservation activities, they can learn about conservation problems. Of equal importance, they can learn what should be done about them. Many will find that they too can assist in solving conservation problems. The Soil Conservation Service is happy to make this publication, prepared originally for other use, available to leaders of Camp Fire Girls to assist them in developing sound soil and water conservation concepts. Many of the activities can be used for individual and team demonstrations. Each is presented in two parts: How-to-do-it and interpretation. The how-to-do-it part is written in a language and style for presentation to Camp, Fire Girls. The interpretation is written for leaders to give them background information so necessary to help in understanding the reason why for what is being done. Leaders can modify the activities according to local interests and needs. Not all steps needed in developing and carrying out some of the activities are given.
