A Look Back at America's Past
This is a charming book of stories of people struggling through the Great Depression the best way they could. I have found it very interesting reading; it rounds out my understanding of how my parents survived a difficult time in America's past. It is interesting because I'm getting ready to write our family's story (genealogy).
Besides the stories, this book offers many substitutions used in the 1930's: Homemade evaporated milk, mock sour cream and sweetened condensed milk. It is very interesting to read the recipes of women who created dishes without, such as: Eggless, Milkless, Butterless Cake, Wild Greens and Squash Griddle Cakes.
This is a delightful book that I look forward to rereading.
