The authors of this book have substantial experience living in East Germany. Their book attempts to debunk propaganda about what life was like there. It addresses the pros and cons of aspects of East Germany, such as health care, the situation of women, labor, politics, etc. They compare these to the situation as it was in West Germany and to what is now a supposedly "reunified" Germany.
They often allude to the differences in the post-WWII denazification programs in the two Germanies, with East Germany clearly coming off better.
Not knowing much about East Germany, it seems to me that theirs is an unbiased account. My only substantial criticism is that, at 167 pages, the book is way too short. I'd like to know a lot more about the subject. Inevitably, I suppose, nearly all of their citations are in German, so it's impossible for the non-German-speaking reader to follow up on them.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about East Germany .
