This book is volume one of a two volume History of the Soviet Space Program. A careful examination of the NASA archives shows that this work serves essentially as the official NASA look at the Soviet program. This is a specialist work aimed at Historians, Political Scientists and Administrators. Perhaps an alternate title for the whole work would be "An Administrative History of the Soviet Space Program" This is fair, given that NASA wants to know how the other guys ran their program What this book is not about is the personal lives, or the technology. The narrative in the first volume is fairly well tied together by the person of Korolev, the Soviet "Chief Designer", and we do learn a bit about him as a person. However; the general run of the text is toward a numbing array of bureaucratic lines and connections, and all the political infighting amongst rival bureaucrats. If you are interested in Soviet, "Cold War" History and Politics, this work contains vast amounts of information available nowhere else in the English language. It is a great antidote to the Cold War Mythology that I grew up with, and which dominates uninformed opinions on the matter. The general reader is likely to be bored to tears, and the technical reader frustrated about the engineering information in the first volume. The second volume is separate from the first and deserves a separate review under it's own title: The Soviet Space Race With Apollo. Separate because it lacks the narrative connection given by the life of Korolev, and suffers from that.
