Famous today as Britain's premier special forces trait, the Special Air Service had its origins in a series of hazardous, and occasionally improbable, missions in World War II. Due to the involvement (and in some instances treachery) of foreign nationals in France, Greece, Yugoslavia and elsewhere, many SAS operations have remained classified. SAS paratroopers planned to land in France on D-Day to ambush advancing German columns in concert with French Resistance fighters.
