Carrieras kunstlerischer Werdegang begann mit der fur Venedig typischen Spitzenherstellung, ehe sie sich der Miniaturmalerei und dann dem Malen mit Pastellkreiden zuwendete. Neben Musen und Allegorien portratierte sie Menschen aus dem Freundes-, Kunstler- und Literaturkreis, aber auch den europaischen Adel. Dabei entwickelte sie eine Bildsprache, die besonders den Typus der lebhaften und selbstbewussten Frau heraus-stellte. Carriera selbst widmete sich ausschliealich der Kunst und verfolgte autark ihre Karriere. Sie gilt als ein Vorbild feministischer Kunstlerinnen.
