As a character study, this novel (as with the others in the trilogy) is an entertaining look at the internal lives and politics of three brothers. It is a little heavy-handed at times (with as many 'tell me' elements as 'show me' elements), but competent and well-crafted in that wise. Despite the fact that the plot is always moving forward, the pace feels slow and even plodding in places. Perhaps I am too stereotypically male as a reader; Fancher's model of event-reaction-reaction-reaction does not appeal to me as much as perhaps it should.
It's definitely worth a read; the first book in the trilogy (Ring of Lightning) hooked me. While that novel took me two days to finish, however, this one has taken me two months. Make of that what you will.
