This incredibly powerful story from Patricia Potter will certainly hold your interest. It seems to tell the story that revenge is best served chilled by a 10 year wait.
The prologue is staggering! Rafe Tyler, a career captain in the US Army in 1863, is found guilty of theft (but not treason) in a military court. He is stripped of his rank, uniform and commendations - then sentenced to 10 years in a federal prison.
But that wasn't enough - they also branded a "T" on his right hand - to forever label him a thief! As the punishment was being meted out, Rafe stared intently at his false accusers. His eyes sent them the message that he would pursue his own justice - after jail!
He survives the horrors of the full 10 year sentence by fueling his hate for the false witnesses and plotters: Major Jack Randall and Sgt. Sam McClary. He also has 6 friends - men who served under him who knew Rafe was innocent.
They got jobs and started digging for information about Jack Randall - who, with the stolen money from the Army, retired and started a large, successful ranch in the Colorado Territory.
Because of Jack's addiction to theft, his wife left him years before, when she found she was carrying his child. They never reconciled and she never told him about the child; she told everyone her husband died in the war. Jack sent her lots of money over the years but Sara never spent any - because she knew the source - theft.
Sara and Shea (the daughter) eked out a very simple existence because money was tight. When Sara died, Shea found the letters from her father (to Sara) and the stacks of money. She wants to know what happened between them (her mother was unfailingly honest) and heads to the Colorado Territory.
This book also explores the issue of "If you get revenge, how do you spend the rest of your life -- after hating so long?" Incredible!
