For several decades now, feminist scholars have proved gender to be a central component of social and political life. While gender studies have traditionally focused on women, masculinity studies have recently started to show how gender affects the lives of both women and men, whose specific gender-ed history as men remains, however, largely unexplored. This study examines the relevance of gender to men's lives by analyzing the social construction of masculinity in contemporary U.S. culture and literature. While Part I (chapters 1-2) provides an introductory and fundamentally theoretical approach to masculinity studies, Part II (chapters 3-5) applies an interdisciplinary corpus of masculinity studies (formed by sociology, psychology, anthropology, philosophy, history, literary theory, etc.) to the analysis of both cultural and literary constructions of masculinity in the U.S. Crossing the traditional divide between "reality" and "fiction," the study is particularly concerned with exploring cultural representations, and re-presentations, of masculinity in and through American literature. The book is addressed to professionals in feminist, gender and masculinity studies. It is also directed towards researchers in American studies and American literature.
