RIPPLING OR SAVING OF FLAX. 125 The seed of flax, when properly secured, is said to be improved by keeping for three years. The saving of the flax seed is sometimes carried out in the field by the process of-' rippling.' The apparatus employed is very simple, consisting of a series of hecklewires placed vertically in a wood base, this resting upon a table or plank supported on stools. The ripplers, set vis-a-vis, at such a distance from the heckle-wires or comb that they can by a little forward inclination of the body, pass the ends of the flax over and through the wires, pulling them out by a gentle backward movement. As the bolls of flax containing the seed are rippled off, they are passed through a coarse riddle, and spread on a cloth and exposed to the sun and air in order to dry them; after which the seed is thrashed out by means of the flail. The husks and refuse are not thrown away, as is too often the case in this country, but are carefully stored up to assist in feeding the animals. "When the grain is kept for seed, the bolls extracted by the rippling process should not be thrashed, but laid aside in a dry place till spring, when they are thrashed. When the flax, stacked up as already described, is taken down to be thrashed, each bundle is untied and placed on the cleanswept floor of the barn, or on a linen cloth, striking the heads with a beater made of a rectangular piece of wood, and provided with a curved handle on the centre (fig. 26).
