Allie Haas only did it for a dare - the kind of dare you know is a mistake but you do it anyway because it's Mistake Yime. But putting on the madcap that Jerry Wirerammer has 'borrowed' was a very big mistake. But putting on the madcap that Jerry Wirerammer has 'borrowed' was a very big mistake. The psychosis itself was quite conventional, a few paranoid delusions, but it didn't go away when she took the madcap off. Jerry did the decent thing and left her at an emergency room for dry-cleaning but then the Brain Police took over. In Mindplayers Ms Cadigan, on the cutting edge of things cyber, acquaints us with the punitive system of flushing out society's undesirables; the convicted lawbreaker is embedded with a more pliable and usable manufactured personality. This seems to be the answer to the prison population overflow. Society supplies the means for cyber replacement of the criminal element which, not suprisingly, breaks cyber usages.
As one would wipe clean a motherboard of familiar (brain-hardware) pathways, so a person's abilities are cleaned of undesirable traits(the mind--software); sometimes so completely that the personality is subsumed to its replacement."Soft" ware never has a chance: The premise is projected @ such breakneck speed that if you're not paying attention to the author's sophistries, you may need to reread. Not to worry!
What I especially like is the absence of dead space: you cannot relax your attention as to where she takes you, and why. SO RELAX! as you are literally drawn into her world. It won't hurt.
There's lots more interesting stuff that you have yet to discover, and the discovery's the thing.
