Martinu's music overflows with Czech-flavored themes and energetic dance rhythms, and the cello sonatas, which were composed between 1939 and 1952, reflect aspects of his changing neo-classical and folk-oriented styles. Isserlis and Mustonen clearly enjoy playing these buoyant works, and the vigor of their performances compels listening in the most direct and delightful way.
