The Great Cities/London is one of twenty-five volumes in the Time-Life book series The Great Cities. In this book, author Aubrey Menen introduces us to the people, places, and personality of London. The Great Fire of 1666, Sir Christopher Wren, the theatre, shops, Soho, London Clubs, the Cockneys, architecture, and the pageantry surrounding the monarch are among the many topics discussed in this book. Picture essays portray the Thames, the Queen's Household Cavalry, and the parks and landmarks of London; photographers Brian Seed and Patrick Thurston have done an excellent job of presenting London in photographs. We also learn about the traits of Londoners: They are calm, reserved, and have a great deal of pride in their city which was once the capital of the world. I found this book to be quite informative and enjoyable but I would have liked a little more history in the narrative. Nevertheless, The Great Cities/London is a very good book about a truly great city.
