For an unlikely subject, Dr. Jeffery Lockwood writes a very interesting, and very readable history of the American West. The locust plagues came and wrecked havoc from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains; from Texas to Minnesota; no one was exempt. These plagues effected the laws of the land and inspired ingenious, but futile attempts to thwart the insects. Many ministers were at a loss to explain why these "biblical plagues" tormented the devout Christian farmers. The locust plagues that scoured the land and wiped out struggling farmers vanished without a trace and no one noticed. This is in effect a who-done-it murder mystery where no one cared. Lockwood raises interesting questions of how their loss has affected the ecology of the land and the survival of other species.
