A little dated, but still useful. The new book on flex and bison isn't released yet so this is still the only useful guide.
The latest flex and bison manuals are better but dense.
This book is a good introduction for simple use and has some good insights. Flex provides exclusive and non-exclusive start states that are very useful for languages where tokenization depends on context. The book probably pre-dates the flex and doesn't cover such usage in its examples.
However, at used book prices, this is a great deal.
I am looking forward to reading the "Flex and Bison" book, due for release in August '09.

This book gives me all I need to Know
Granted, I have written lex and yacc apps in the past, but, I learned how from simply reading the Unix documentation..this is far superior. It also teaches a little about grammars and gives great sound examples. You must be willing to wade into cold water without flinching, however, and this is not for the "sunday morning programmer". The concepts are higher level computer science concepts, not high school hacker. Great book, great tool!
