I am amazed that I have never read Patience Gray before. What an incredible book. Life on the lam from gray England of the 1950's with incredible insight into how everyday people live in parts of Europe not discussed in tour books. Her Kitchen on Naxos in Greece is a lesson in not having or caring about a large gas range. If you are interested in food history and learning about the everyday people of Italy, Greece and Spain plus some wonderful recipes. She also gives you an idea of the perfect fitting out of a kitchen from knifes to large pots, just the essentials, I had thrown out my Mortar and Pestle and now I will have to buy a new one, because so many of her recipes are done with one and not with the food processor. This is food in raw beautiful surroundings told with a wonderful sense of humor.
