If so, it might probably be expressed thus: Other foundation can no man lay than that which is appointed (or set, i.e., by appointment), as the word occurs in this sense, e.g., in Luke ii. 34: "This child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel" (observe how this refers to the prophecy of the stone, Is. viii. and xxviii., which should be a foundation and yet a stumbling stone); and Phil, i. 17, "I am set for the defence of the gospel." Ver. 17. If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy. These words should be identical in the English as they are in the Greek. Ver. 18, 19. If any man... seemeth to be wise in this world... For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. These words are not identical, being the same and in the same order as those noticed in chap. i. 20. CHAPTER IV. 1. Ministers of Christ. This is not the word of chap. iii. 5, but one which occurs no where else in the Epistles, though frequently in the Gospels and Acts, where it is generally translated officer. Ver. 3. That I should be judged of you or of man's judgment. There is no verbal relationship between these words in the original, the latter being, as in our margin, day; and the idea being similar to that where he has repeatedly expressed regarding the present age (or world) as characterised by self conceit and spiritual ignorance. Ver. 13, 16. We entreat; I beseech you. The same verb. Paul probably had no intention of expressly illustrating in the latter verse the principle he enunciated in the former, yet he does illustrate it, for in Corinth he had been defamed, and now he entreats.
