An old classic
Milt Gross, an early twentieth century cartoonist used the speaking patterns of new immigrants to the United States to retell stories and poems that are well known to most graduates of US education systems. I promise that the retellings are unique treasures. They are probably not considered politically correct in today's world but reveal a lot about the past. This book was written in the 1920's and was one my father had. I read
"The Song of Hiawatha" to a class of young people and found myself wanting to reread this pastiche version. Still as much pleasure today as it was forty years ago. I felt a reconnection with my Yiddish roots and could in some way reconnect with my father too. Gross was a genius and the illustrations, also by the author, add to the fun.
