Excerpt from Heart Story of the Early Lincoln: With Frontispiece It was not for any length of time young Lincoln and his intended bride enjoyed their delightful rambles. The dread Disease was upon her and the day came when she could no longer walk with him through the flowering lanes and fields, visiting those warm-hearted neighbors where they were ever made welcome. She was four years younger than her prospective husband, having been born in Kentucky, the State of his own nativity, in January, 1813. When her family re moved to New Salem in 1824 she was accordingly in her eleventh year. On the authority of Herndon she was of the noted family of Rutledge of South Carolina, where her father, James Rutledge, was born, and it appears, on the credit of the same sponsorship that she was grand daughter of Edward Rutledge, leader of the four delegates from the Palmetto State to the First American Congress, and signer of the Declaration of Independence. In her veins therefore flowed the blood of Liberty-loving stock whose patriotic ardor had been intensified under the Revolutionary roar of the cannon which made the country Free and Independent. Possessed of a rare mind and disposition in which all the charms of her sex seemed to unite, she was also a person of native, or inherited, refinement, in harmony with the strength and scope of her mental endowments. The qualities of her great forebear seemed to be centered in her intellect and winning personality. There were other children of James Rutledge, younger than she, who was the eldest; several brothers and sisters. Next to her in age was David, a bright and promising young man, in mind and disposition much like his sister. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and gave every evidence of a brilliant career, one that would shed lustre on the Revo lutionary name of his ancestor, but he passed away early, dying in 1842 in his twenty-seventh year. His remains lie in the same little grave-yard by the side of his beautiful and gifted sister, who had passed away seven years before, in August, 1835.
