After years of guest MC and vocal appearances on Shaggy's hits and other smaller projects with famed New York producer Sting International, dancehall/hip-hop MC Rayvon finally got a chance to stretch out on his 1997 solo debut, Hear My Cry. Somewhat slicker than earlier collaborations with Shaggy, Hear My Cry features Rayvon's smooth singing voice and expert dancehall flow. Producer Funk Master Flex handles the console on a couple of choice numbers, but for the most part, the Rayvon/Sting International team lays down graceful, somewhat subdued tracks with soul and intelligence. The Rhonda Davis duet "Stallion Ride" is a chillout treat and guest appearances by Shaggy ("Old Foot") and Maxi Priest ("Get up Stand Up," also featuring Shaggy) add a nice touch without overshadowing Rayvon's stellar vocals. Other standouts include the hip-hop-inflected "Party Vibes" and the opener, "Girl Jackie." Elegant and charismatic, Rayvon delivers fine performances of powerful, sexy, and mature material on Hear My Cry, a record deserving of the highest recommendation. ~ Vincent Jeffries, Rovi
