Douglas Reeman served in the British Royal Navy throughout World War 2, so when he writes about that, as he does in this book, his descriptions are accurate. He captures life and battle at sea in detail.
In one sense, Reeman's work tends to follow a formula: the ship and crew almost always face particularly heavy odds in the climactic battle. Another of his novels referred to a battered ship "limping towards destruction but refusing to die."
HMS Saracen, one of his earliest books, is unusual because about half of it is set early in the FIRST World War. Saracen is brand-new then, an unusual design built specifically to give big-gun support to troops ashore. The main character is also new to the RN, and Saracen is the first ship he serves on - supporting the Gallipoli campaign.
The action then skips to 26 years later, in 1941, as the hero returns to Saracen. Now he's her new captain, and he feels the need to prove that his ship is more useful than most of the RN has come to think.
