In this project work, the permissible limit of sodium, magnesium and Potassium chloride in mixing water for cement mortar has been evaluated experimentally. In the literature review considerable work is not carried out on permissible limit of sodium, magnesium and potassium chloride limit in mixing water for cement or concrete. Many codes are recommended permissible limit of chlorides in mixing water for cement or concrete but not recommended sodium, magnesium and potassium chloride. Indian standards of 456-2000 was recommended chlorides permissible limit i.e., 2000 mg/L in the mixing water for concrete, but not recommended limit of sodium chloride, magnesium and potassium chloride. The effect of Sodium, Magnesium and Potassium chlorides with concentrations 2000mg/L, 3000mg/L and 4000mg/L on setting times, compressive and flexure strength were performed in the laboratory. Out of three chlorides, magnesium chloride has performed the best. Sodium chloride, magnesium chloride and potassium chloride are recommended in plain cement mortar at concentrations of 3000mg/L, 4000mg/L and 4000mg/L respectively.
