Personal Name and Author Index. Subject Index. DJ has some wear and soiling. Some ink marks and creased corners noted. The most important reason for this revised edition were the SALT negotiations that occurred after the first edition was published. Chapter IX has been extended to cover these changes, and numerous other small changes have been added in the earlier chapters to update numerical and technical data and to cite recent useful references. Albert Legault was a Quebec researcher and professor. He was a renowned researcher in the field of strategic studies. He specializes in peacekeeping, he had published several books on the themes of nuclear deterrence in the world and disarmament. Dr. George R. Lindsey (1920-2011), a leading Canadian defence scientist, gained widespread recognition in the Western alliance during a government career that spanned nearly the whole of the Cold War. Trained as a scientist in nuclear physics, he conducted operational research during the Second World War and became a strategic analyst for the Canadian defence department in the post-war period. He played a key role in developing modern capacities in both fields while defending Canadian interests on the front lines of Cold War military planning and preparations. The main chapters are: Nuclear Explosives, Offensive Strategic Missiles, Ballistic-Missile Defense, The Ballistic-Missile Submarine and Antisubmarine Defense, Strategic Bombers and Air Defense, Deterrence, A Theoretical Model of Deterrence, From Disarmament to Arms Control, and The Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. In 1970, Lindsey was sent to Quebec City so he could take intensive languages courses in French. Lindsey quickly grew bored. He quit the group French and joined a francophone seminar taught by political scientist Albert Legault at nearby Laval University. By the end of the year he was so involved with the class that he ended up publishing a book with Legault titled The Dynamics of the Nuclear Balance in English and Le Feu Nucléaire in French. It is now considered a classic.
