ââ?¬Å"Demon Lord Risingââ?¬Â? by Jason Farrell and Michael de Weever is an action-packed, thrill-seeking epic fantasy novel. The Shadow Prince, once a man whose greed for power consumed him, is the commander of the Stygian Knights. Thought to have been vanquished twenty years ago by the Druids Lark and Kael, the Demon Lord has defied the odds and is amassing an army of evil. Their goal? Destroy all who oppose the Shadow Prince.
Man, dwarf, elf â" regardless of race, gender or age, everyone is expendable to the Demon Lord. Sage Algernon, a wise, trusted friend of the Wizard-King Thargelion of Wrenford, must gather a party of heroes to take a special object, the Emerald Star, to neighboring kingdoms in the hopes of forming an alliance against the Shadow Prince. While evil seeks to enslave the world, Algernon and his companions will fight to save freedom. Mortal danger and terrible sacrifice will be required if they are to succeed.
My best friend got me into the Shannara saga when we were freshmen in high school. For the next eleven years that series was a staple of my literary adventures. It has been a little over three years since the final book was released, and ever since I have been looking for the next big thing to fill the void it left behind. ââ?¬Å"Demon Lord Risingââ?¬Â? by Farrell and de Weever has finally filled that void.
The book has everything a proper epic fantasy knockout requires. A collection of careworn, slightly stubborn, and fiercely loyal heroes? Check. Terrifying creatures that can kill you in the most excruciating ways possible? Check. Evil princes, armies of evil races, and one all-powerful, all evil villain? Triple check. ââ?¬Å"Demon Lord Risingââ?¬Â? is fast-paced, but thoughtful; devastating, yet filled with hope. Each character from Algernon; his Druid companions, the Shadow Prince, and even those of lesser importance were all dedicated an equal amount of attention and development. The world building was next-level and the end goal: defeating the greatest evil of all, left me breathless.
Fans of Terry Brooks, Christopher Paolini and the Dragonlance saga will flock to the newest smash hit in the epic fantasy genre. What I think is overlooked in fantasy is that even though the characters may have magic, immortality, or be of nonhuman origin, their trials and tribulations are not so different. Wherever there is civilization and culture, there will be a fight between good and evil. Wherever there is power, there will be those who wish to usurp it even if it means destroying innocent lives. Fantasy is a window into not only the current state of our real world, but into the fears we have of what the future might become if we do not open our eyes to the evils in our own world. Farrell and de Weeverââ?¬â?¢s ââ?¬Å"Demon Lord Risingââ?¬Â? has burst onto the scene with a vengeance for justice, and I cannot wait for the next book in the series!
