Artist, hunter, angler, writer, and a friend of the literary great, including Sir Walter Scott, Scrope fished the Tweed for twenty years. His book is par-tly practical and he certainly knew all there was then to know about tackle, the tying of flies, the habits of fish, and the most successful ways to catch them. But the permanence of his work lies in his reminiscences, his conversations with other anglers and with ghillies, his fine handling of dialogue, his skill in telling stories, and in delving into folklore. Extremely well written, at times learned but never dull, his contribution to angling literature is still a classic. -The illustrations are delightful and informative. `` Starkman & Read. p123. -The Contemp-lative Man`s Recreation. Included in their list of the forty book that are the ``Landmarks in the Evolution of the Literature of Angling: 1496-1969``.
