This book is an 875 page doorstopper. It is a highly detailed review of the French Revolution from beginning to end. The book is encyclopedic !!. It is also well ilustrated. Schama is of course a very prolific historian. He has covered the British Monarchy and has written extensively on U.S. history.
There were so many players and actors in the French Revolution that it is often hard to keep track of who is who.
Schama's discussion of Charlotte Corday, the assassin of Joachim Marat in his bathtub
is a lustrous jewel in this story.
I was enlightened for the most part by this history but at times was a bit confused as more and more unfamiliar French names and place names were introduced but not fully explained. Of course if they were all explained the book would have been twice as long.
Taken as a whole I enjoyed many parts of the book and suffered through other parts. Which I suppose attests to the validity of Schamas' effort. David A. Reskof, M.D..
