America is no more the land of humbug and swindle than are the States of the Old World. After all, so far as psychical epidemics are concerned, what does it matter whether the intellectual standard of one country is slightly superior to that of another? The susceptibility for psychical epidemics is in no way afl'ected thereby; the difi'erence between civilized countries is too slight, but the similarities are very pronounced. Psychical epidemics naturally find the same fertile ground for development in Germany as in the United States or in England, or any other country, since all nations consider themselves the most enlightened, and look upon others with a certain disdain.
