But to avoid confusion some are only indicated by the first letter, others by the two first, others by the first syllable, others by some conventional mark, as may be seen in the subjoined table. These praenomens, however, were not in use in all the gentes alike without distinction. Some are more frequently found in one gens, some in another, owing to the desire in each gens to perpetuate within itself the praenomen of some illustrious ancestor.
