Free yourself from tension and fear
I bought this book because I really liked the premise--that most or all pain that women experience in childbirth is caused by tension, fear, and resistance to the body's natural power, which in turn are largely brought about by cultural assumptions and historical experiences. I went into my first labor relatively fit and superficially confident but carrying with me the horror stories of my own birth and many others that I'd heard from my parents, from television, from my reading, and so on, and although there were no complications and the baby came quickly, I experienced severe pain and significant fear in the process. For about three months after my son's birth, I felt a bit depressed, obsessing over my own mortality and my perceived limitations of my body's ability to function. Now I'm preparing to give birth to my second child, and it remains to be seen whether I will be able to apply Dick-Read's principles of relaxation successfully and experience a pain-free labor, but I am hopeful that I will at least be able to significantly reduce the pain and emotional trauma this time around. In the meantime, I am already feeling much less fearful about the whole idea of having a baby. CHILDBIRTH WITHOUT FEAR is a truly empowering read! The book is dense to read compared to many other guides to childbirth, and many readers may give up after the first chapter or two, but if you can get through the whole thing, it is well worth the effort! It gets better and better as you go along. I even got over my initial reluctance to trust a man's perspective on this female experience, since the author is so obviously sincerely empathetic and an excellent listener and observer. I thoroughly enjoyed the autobiographical section at the end of my edition and wished I could have Grantly Dick-Read as my own doctor. I have asked my husband to read this book before our baby arrives, as well, so that he will be better able to support me and our child and to deal with our other birth attendants when the time arrives. I thoroughly recommend CHILDBIRTH WITHOUT FEAR to any woman (and her helpers) who wants to deliver her baby naturally and to know, at last, that her body is designed to accomplish this amazing feat perfectly and without trauma. It will even be comforting to those who, for one reason or another, cannot have completely natural deliveries.
