If the snow never gets very deep, or if it is usually quite solid, small shoes should be selected, especially if the ground is rough and covered with boulders, fallen trees, etc. Where the snow gets damp and packy the mesh should be more open and coarse to prevent the snow from packing under the foot. If there are many hills, the shoe should be of the flat style and the toe of good width. These and many other things should be remembered when buying snowshoes. It is always best to have snowshoes made to order, for the stock snowshoe is never satisfactory. They are as a rule of cheap, flimsy construction, the frames of poor wood and the filling not fully stretched. As a result when they get damp the filling bags and the frames soon take on a rocker shape. Such shoes only last a short time, and although they cost less in the beginning are expensive in the end. A pair of good snowshoes will cost from $5.50 to $7.50, seldom less. If you do not feel like paying that sum, learn to make them yourself. While they will cost just as much in time and labor the average man can usually find plenty of time which would otherwise be unprofitably employed, and then he can see just what goes into the construction and can bring in all of the good points and eliminate the bad ones. For general use, where one can afford only one pair of snowshoes, I would recommend selecting a shoe on the lines of the one shown in Figure 2. It should be of the flat shape; frames made of white ash, yellow birch or hickory and of clear straight grained wood without a flaw.
