My copy of "Broken Hierarchies" arrived on schedule, in new condition, and was purchased for less than many used copies cost. I am very pleased with the service.
The book itself is quite something, and I expect that I will spend a long time becoming familiar with its contents.
This book includes Hill's complete published poems over a 50-year span. It is therefore far larger and more complete than his earlier "Collected Poems." Hill had published comparatively little until a remarkable later-in-life creative efflorescence, of the sort that should give hope to many a struggling artist.
To read Hill's poetry is notoriously challenging. Although he uses familiar forms of rhyme and meter, his language, syntax and especially themes are often obscure. Few readers are likely to possess the grounding in history, theology, and literature that might make the poems more easily understood. For us mere mortals, they are puzzles, to be worked out diligently and with the help of some books -- but even at first glance, they are beautiful puzzles.
