Tina Cassidy's incredibly well-researched tome on the history of childbirth is a book I would recommend to anybody contemplating parenthood. However, I'd say to read it well in advance of a pregnancy. Reading this while expecting may very well lead to nightmares, for the history of childbirth includes many nightmarish things: puerperal fever, craniotomies, and throughout too many historic eras, a horrendous disregard for the humanity and well-being of the mother-to-be. This isn't merely a collection of horror stories, however. It's a thoughtful look at the evolution of childbirth, which of course stems from the evolution of the human being. As we moved from walking on all fours to walking upright as bipeds, the pelvis by necessity narrowed, causing all sorts of complications for the safe delivery of infants. Combine that with the largeness of the human infant's cranium, and you've got yourself one heck of a pickle. Cassidy takes this information and from there shows how throughout recorded history, humankind has tried to solve the conundrum of childbirth. Often these efforts led us to get in our own way, because a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing. Once we lost the instinctive behaviors of our fellow primates, all sorts of silly beliefs sprang up about chilbirth and babies. It has been a long, slow march towards understanding what is best for mothers and babies. We're not there yet by any means, but this book illustrates just how far we have come.
