Im Buch wird anhand mehrerer Fallbeispiele aus der Zeit der Spatantike und des fruhen Mittelalters dargelegt, dass diese Sicht der immanenten Logik vieler prominenter Christusbilder nicht gerecht wird. Dagegen wird aufgezeigt, dass die Bild-Ambiguitaten von den Produzenten mit groaem konzeptuellem Kalkul in Szene gesetzt wurden und im Rahmen eines christlichen Bekehrungs-Diskurses zu verstehen sind, bei dem Momente der Liminalitat - die kognitive Verwirrung, der Glaubenszweifel und die innere Wandlung - eine entscheidende Rolle spielen.
