Age of Enlightenment is one of twenty-one volumes from the Time-Life book series Great Ages of Man. Published in the 1960s, this series is an overview of the major eras of world history. This volume depicts the intellectual, philosophical, and religious trends in Europe in the 18th century. Topics covered include the Scientific Revolution (the work of Galileo and Newton), the secularization of religion, Deism, the various religious groups and sects in Europe at the time, David Hume and his book A Treatise of Human Nature, Baron de Montesquieu and his book Spirit of the Laws, Voltaire and his book The Social Contract, the rise of literacy and the novel, drama and the theater, the development of social history, the beginnings of the science of psychology, mercantilism, the Industrial Revolution and its effects, men of music (Bach, Handel, Mozart), opera, the German Enlightenment (Leibniz and Goethe are two of the many major figures in this chapter), and Denis Diderot's Encyclopedia. The book concludes with an analysis of how the ideas of the Enlightenment influenced both the American Revolution and the French Revolution. Reason over superstition, truth over ignorance, the ability of science to benefit mankind, and the search for an ideal society are the major themes developed in this book. As with other books in this series, numerous illustrations and photographs supplement the narrative. A map of cities of the Enlightenment, a timeline, an index, and a bibliography are included. Because this book deals more with philosophical ideas than events, it has a different feel compared to other books I have read in this series. Still, Age of Enlightenment goes a long way in helping the reader understand the intellectual, economic, and musical trends of the 18th century.
