Seller's Description:
VG/G-, covers have stickers residue and covers bumped. Pages clean and tight. Signed by author-title page. Red covers, gilt lettering and family seal on front cover. 246 pages illustrations. The Russell family (part of the English nobility as the Dukes of Bedford) of Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire, England between the 1400s and 1959.
This book is excellent! I read it some years ago and thought so then.
It is an in-depth portrait of the Duke of Bedford and his life and times.
Though having led a life of some priviledge, he is remarkably down-to-earth, as have been his three wives.
It is too bad that his life was cut short 3-4 years ago, as was his son and heir the following year, after having been duke only about 10 months.
This is a remarkable family who have pulled themselves from near financial ruin to being very successful at running the family farm, paying off all the death duty and emerging very wealthy indeed.
This book gives on a very good insight to the workings and often grandeur of a very old noble family.
