I gave this book to my 12 yr. old grandson and he loved it. I used to teach this novel to 10th grade students who had trouble with English, and they ALL read it and enjoyed it. A truly lovely novel.

Disturbing
I know there are plenty of people who love this book, but I found it quite disturbing. I was required to read it in jr. high, and hated it. As an adult, I found a copy at a book sale and thought it couldn't be as bad as I remembered, but in fact, it was worse than I remembered. The "weaseling" the dog gave me nightmares about the poor dog being trapped in a barell with a weasel until the dog had to be shot and killed. The mating of the pig seemed much like a rape scene, and in fact the comment that was made about it. While some may love it, it is not a book for the more sensitive or squeemish.
