Whitman's famous ride and much of the history of his life in connection with early Oregon are here set forth. In his previous book for boys, With Fremont, the Pathfinder, the author followed the career of Gen eral John C. Fremont, and gave an account of the manner in which California became a part of the Union. The aim of the present volume is to show, in the form of an interesting and entertaining story, how the vast region called Oregon became a part of the United States.
